Site problems will be sorted, residents told

A meeting has taken place to address the ongoing problems of fly-tipping and unsecured fences at Bachelors Avenue.

And PUP members, who are representing residents, said they had been assured there are plans to resolve the issue.

Residents have been calling for action on the site, part of which has lain derelict after the builder, Tiffen Developments, was placed in administration more than a year ago.

PUP members met this week with a representative from Colliers International, the company appointed by receiver Ulster Bank to manage the development.

Brian Cummings of the PUP said the meeting had been “extremely constructive”. “Full consideration was given to the residents’ concerns regarding the unsightly view from their homes, reported fly tipping, unsecure fencing and issues that could possibly have health and safety implications,” he said.

“We told them that residents have seen their frustration turn to anger because of the lack of urgency in making good and seeing their investment in what should have been a dream home become a building/dump site.”

He added, “Martin McKibbin from Colliers was able to enlighten us to a joint proposal with themselves and the Ulster Bank regarding the takeover of this development and other similar sites. Should that not be the case he gave assurances that the site would be put on the market within the next four to six weeks and be attractively marketed to interest immediate investors.”

Portadown PUP representative John Stevenson said it was also requested that the fencing around the unfinished areas is made safe and that no further dumping takes place.

Added Mr Stevenson, “We have number plates of vehicles which have been dumping and if it continues we will be passing them in to the relevant authorities. We, as a party, are addressing these issues on a number of derelict sites across the local area and will update residents in due course.”

No-one from Colliers was available for comment at the time of going to press.
