Sixty-four year old told he should be ashamed of himself

Peter Outhwaite, Wentworth Green, Portadown, at a previous court, had admitted two assaults on police officers on December 11 last year.

The case had been adjourned for a pre-sentence report. A public prosecutor said police were helping the ambulance services who were dealing with the defendant.

Outhwaite became aggressive and pushed a police officer out of the way and attempted to head-butt another officer.

A barrister representing the defendant said he had a number of bereavement issues and there was a spiral into alcohol consumption.

He added that Outhwaite was ashamed of himself, remorseful and apologetic for his behaviour.

The lawyer said that the defendant was addressing his issues, had not consumed alcohol since this incident and the Pastor of his church had been a help to him.

Deputy District Judge Peter Prenter told Outhwaite that he ‘should be ashamed of yourself, a man of your age getting on like this’.

But, he added, he would take into account the defendant’s plea, the fact he was dealing with his alcohol problem and that he had bereavement issues as well.

For each of the two assaults he imposed a fine of £250 and also ordered the defendant to pay a £15 offender’s levy.
