More than 120 members of eight Slimming World groups from Portadown, Lurgan and Brownlow took part in a Race for Life event at Craigavon Lakes, raising around £2,750 for their partner charity, Cancer Research UK.

They were joined by their families, friends and pets, with those taking part able to choose the distance they wanted to cover.

The race was part of a wider national event running across all Slimming World groups.

Eleanor Crory, who runs the group at Portadown Rugby Club, said, “It was a fantastic event with a real feel-good atmosphere. Entrants could run, walk, cycle or skate across the finish line – whatever they wanted – as long as they finished we didn’t mind at all!

“I’m so pleased to raise money for Cancer Research UK and I think the event showed people just how motivating being part of a group like ours can be. ... One in three people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, and research has shown that many types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight.”

Heather Sturgeon, who has lost over six stone at the Portadown Rugby Club group, said, “I used to really struggle with exercise, and found it really daunting taking those first steps to becoming more active.

“I definitely wouldn’t have entered a distance race before I found Slimming World, but since losing weight I’m feeling much healthier, happier and more confident – I’m so proud of myself and I know my friends and family are too.”
