A Tandragee man involved in a car chase with police was jailed for five months last Friday at Craigavon Magistrates Court.

Kenneth Rutherford (47) of Clare Road was given five months for driving while disqualified in March 2012.

A concurrent three-month term was imposed for dangerous driving at Newforge Road, Steps Road, Redhill Road and Ballygowan Road.

Rutherford was also banned from driving for three years. He was convicted of the offences after a contest.

A vehicle driven by Rutherford had turned into the
Newforge Road at Magheralin and a police constable had to move quickly to avoid being hit.

The defendant then turned onto the Steps Road and
accelerated through speed bumps outside the primary school. The chase continued for four miles.

A barrister said the offences happened the day
after he had been released from prison.

District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, said it was a dreadful piece of driving and the lives of several police officers were put at risk.
