A full trial at Crown Court is to take place in the case of a teenager accused of stealing a soft drink worth £1.49 from a Dungannon supermarket.

David Armstrong (19) of Mahon Road, Portadown is alleged to have committed the offence on April 8, 2013.

He appeared before Dungannon Magistrates Court where the charge was formally put to him.

On being asked at what level he wished to have the case heard, Armstrong replied “Higher court”, exercising his right to have the facts decided by a jury at trial as opposed to a district judge sitting alone at magistrates court.

The case has been adjourned until 28 May when a date for formal committal to crown court will be identified.
