The Portadown Times wants you, our readers, to help us find the person who made Portadown most proud during 2013.

The Portadown’s Person To be Proud Of is an award launched by the paper to recognise the huge contribution made by a great many people from this town. The winner will take a fantastic prize. All four main shopping centres, Asda, Magowan West, The Meadows and High Street Mall, will be donating shopping vouchers to our winner, totalling over £400 in value.

Do you know someone who helps to make Portadown special? Is there an individual, a volunteer, local personality or someone else who deserves recognition for their achievements or for the community spirit they have shown?

If you do, we want you to contact us as we draw up our shortlist for the third Portadown’s Person To Be Proud Of award.

Last year the competition was won by Joan Ferguson with Doctor Gilbert Carson scooping the inaugural award a year before when more than 1,000 public votes were cast.

Portadown Times editor Alistair Bushe said, “There are many people from Portadown who, over the years, have made this town very proud of what they have achieved. During 2013 this tradition was continued by a number of people.

“Several people from the town have even made national and international headlines in 2013 but our Portadown’s Person To Be Proud Of award is not just about recognising those worthy individuals, it’s about recognising the people who work hard on the ground to improve life in their own communities.

“In short, we want your opinion on the person who made Portadown most proud in 2013. With your help we are drawing up a shortlist of finalists. You will have your say on the winner when the list is published next month.”

The next step is for readers to nominate people for the award. You can email your nominations to editor@portadowntimes.co.uk or text the name of your nomination to 84555, starting the message with PTTEXT and then a space. Alternatively you can contact the editorial team on 028 38 336111 or write to us at Portadown Person to be Proud of, Portadown Times, 2 Esky Drive, Portadown, BT63 5YY. You can also nominate via our facebook page or at Twitter at @portadowntimes1.

The closing date for nominations is Monday, February 11 at 1pm. The final shortlist will be revealed in the Portadown Times on Friday, February 15 when readers will have the chance to vote for their winner.
