Malcolm McKeown, whose address was given to the court as Parkmore, Craigavon, had pleaded guilty at a previous court to unlawful possession of a class B drug, cannabis, on January 23 this year.

The case was adjourned to that a pre-sentence report could be obtained.

The court heard that at 10.20pm in Bridge Street, Portadown, police spoke to McKeown and asked him to empty his pockets.

He produced a small block of cannabis which he said he had bought for £20.

McKeown had previous convictions for similar offences in 2014 and 2015 and a relevant caution in 2013.

Mr Gabriel Ingram, representing the defendant, said the pre-sentence report was positive and that McKeown wanted to break the cycle of offending.

He added that probation could help him.

Imposing the 12 month order District Judge, Mr Mervyn Bates, told McKeown a condition was that he should attend any alcohol or drug counselling course as directed by a probation officer.
