Work starts to strengthenbridge

Work was due to begin today (Monday) on a £200,000 project to strengthen and refurbish Verners Bridge in Tamnamore.

According to the DRD, 100 metres of the road will be closed to through traffic while the repairs are carried out.

The closure will run continuously for 10 weeks until Sunday, May 22.

Vehicles requiring access to lands or premises abutting the closed length of road will be accommodated.

Diversion routes will be signposted via Tamnamore Road, Bovean Road, Trewmount Road, Killyman Street, Charlemount Street Street, Collegelands Road, Summerisland Road, Tullyroan Road, Clonmore Road and vice versa.

Transport Minister Michelle McIlveen, “This is a major investment for the local area. Verners Bridge on the Tamnamore Road is an important link road for local access and is in close proximity to the M1 motorway. The old bridge will be sympathetically restored enabling it to be used for many years to come.”

Verners Bridge, which crosses the River Blackwater, was built in 1890 and has an iron structure.
