£125,000 project to improve appearance of town centre
A PROJECT aimed at rejuvenating Portadown town centre’s retail and evening economy is set to start next month.
The £125,000 Portadown Revitalisation Project is unique to the town and will include physical improvements to approximately 60 businesses, vacancy reduction programmes and practical marketing initiatives and events.
It has been developed by Craigavon Borough Council in partnership with Portadown Retail Action Group and is fully funded by Department of Social Development.
The first stage is a scheme designed to inject life into vacant unit shop windows and closed shutters to improve the appearance of the town centre. This will be achieved by installing images in shop windows and decorating shutters with artwork.
The second is a shop front painting scheme which will give business premises a make-over to improve the physical appearance of units.
Finally, an environmental improvement scheme will address areas in need of improvement and will include fixing fences and cleaning up alleyways.
Said a council spokesman, “All of these initiatives will create a fresher, more vibrant town centre which is more attractive to visitors, investors and businesses.”
Councillor Darryn Causby, chair of the development committee, said. “Improving the look of businesses and in turn the town will help increase the economic potential of the area and work towards attracting investment and stimulating employment opportunities. I look forward to seeing the completion of the works.”
