Aaron proves that romance isn’t dead with North Coast proposal

VALENTINE’S Day is billed as the most romantic day of the year with most loved ones receiving flowers, chocolates and oversized stuffed animals.

But one Portadown man went a step further - in fact he took a ‘giant’ leap forward - by proposing to his girlfriend of two years at the Giant’s Causeway. And happily, she said yes.

26-year-old Aaron Quinn, who works as a software engineer, whisked his now fiancee Sarah May, off to the North Coast for a relaxing Valentine’s weekend break. Little did Sarah (24) know that Aaron had been busy arranging how he was going to ‘pop’ the question since January.

And while most suitors would be content with one of Northern Ireland’s most stunning areas of natural beauty as the backdrop to making a marriage proposal, Aaron ensured that Sarah - who works as a paediatric intensive care nurse in Belfast - didn’t miss out on the all trappings of Cupid’s favourite holiday. In fact, as well as presenting her with 12 red roses and a Pandora heart charm, the Portadown man had commissioned a special hexagon sign saying, ‘Will you marry me?’ - a question he also repeated on personalised Love Heart sweets.

Of course, Aaron needed the help of staff members at Northern Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction and he says that they were only too happy to help. “I chose the Giants Causeway because me and Sarah bought a 24-year-old camper van last year and had spent time touring around, and the causeway was one of the places we visited a lot. It’s a special place for us.

“So I went up last weekend and left the hexagon sign with them. I also brought a table and chairs and champagne,” he explained, before revealing that he was up at 6am on Valentine’s Day morning to visit a florist’s and to buy strawberries.

“On the day of the proposal I brought Sarah down to where the staff members had set up the table. It went perfectly. One of the staff members was hanging about looking a bit suspicious with a litter picker but with no bag,” he laughed.

“I asked Sarah to marry me and she said yes and a group of American tourists were nearby and they started shouting and screaming. She had absolutely no idea that I was going to propose. She’s over-the-moon, we both are.”

Aaron added that since he revealed how he proposed on his Facebook page, his male friends have been jokingly complaining that he has “raised the bar” for other men who want to propose. “I’ve upped the ante,” he laughed. The moment he asked his sweetheart to marry him will also be ‘carved’ in stone for ever, as Aaron has sponsored a virtual Giant’s Causeway stone online, which reads, ‘Sarah, will you marry me?’
