Baby Maisy born on the Northway

BABY Maisy Wilding made a dramatic entrance to the world on Wednesday when she was born on the Northway, in the passenger seat of her parents’ car.
Mum Kirsty (29), from Rectory Park, had gone into labour and was being driven to Craigavon Area Hospital by husband Warren when they became stuck in morning, rush-hour traffic.
The couple were in the right hand lane, waiting to turn up towards Seagoe, when their second daughter decided she wasn’t going to hang about any longer.
Kirsty’s sister Emma Black, who was in the back seat, could only watch as her niece’s head first appeared, followed by the rest of her body.
The sisters’ mum Lorna Dougan, who lives in Markethill, was following on a few cars behind, unaware that her granddaughter had already been born.
Said Emma, “It was a mixture of shock, fear and excitement. We are still getting over it!
“Kirsty went into labour at about five in the morning and her husband phoned me two hours later to say she had got into the bath.
“Then I got a call asking me to go over to the house. Her contractions were coming every minute and I knew we had to get to the hospital quickly.”
The pair managed to help Kirsty into the car but found themselves stuck in traffic at what is one of the peak times of the day, and on the Northway which is currently partly coned off for roadworks.
Said Emma, “We were surrounded by traffic. Kirsty was in a lot of pain and saying she needed to push, then she said the head was out. There were cars on both sides and I couldn’t even open the door to get to her.
“Kirsty was holding onto the passenger rail near the roof and leaning back with her head towards me. The next thing was, the rest of the baby came out.
“None of us spoke for a second or two - we were in so much shock. Then Warren told Kirsty to lift the baby and hold it and I got my coat and put it round her.”
Emma, who has two children of her own, admitted that she was initially worried that the baby appeared blue but once she “let a big cry out of her” they knew she was okay.
And after what seemed like a lifetime, but was only a couple of minutes, the family finally reached the top of the traffic queue and headed for the hospital.
Emma said, “Warren told me to phone the hospital and tell them to be ready but in my panic I phoned the community midwife instead. I explained to her what happened and she said she would contact them.
“When we got there, two nurses were waiting and Kirsty and the baby were taken up to the Midwifery Led Unit. The cord was cut there and they are both doing great. It’s something we will never forget.”
Maisy, who was born at 8.50am and weighed in at 7lb 12 ounces, is doing well and both she and her mum were due to go home yesterday (Thursday).
The couple, who have an older daughter Tia, two-and-a-half, have thanked the midwifery staff at Craigavon Area Hospital for their care and support.
