Barbaric cat attack ‘seen by children’

AN incident in Ballyoran Park in which a cat was allegedly thrown into a pack of dogs has been described as “absolutely barbaric” by community worker Yvonne Sterritt.

She said children who witnessed the act of animal cruelty, which took place just before one o’clock on Friday, July 13, were “hysterical”.

According to local reports, there were still signs of life in the cat when the culprit lifted it and threw it into a nearby wheelie bin.

Children who witnessed what happened informed the cat’s owner who retrieved it from the bin.

Said Mrs Sterritt, “The owner is a real animal lover and she sat with the cat for three hours before it died. The community here is disgusted and appalled at what took place and I would appeal for anyone with information to pass it on to the police.”

Police are investigating the incident and have issued a description of the dog owner who they say is 17-18 years old and 6ft tall with dark hair and wearing jeans and a T-shirt.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
