Big crowds to flock to country extravaganza

COUNTRY Comes to Town got off to a great start this week with the ever-popular family dog show which was held at Portadown Markets.

Pooches of all shapes and sizes, with some in fancy dress, entered a variety of classes, including best dressed dog and dog with the waggiest tail.

The entertainment continues today (Friday) at St Mark’s Plaza from 1-5 with the Q Radio Roadshow, and requests are encouraged!

Tonight is a special one for the children with the teddy bears’ picnic in the Meadows Shopping Centre and, for adults, a Bike Fest with the Grim Reapers motorbike club in Woodhouse Street.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the town will be transformed for the main day of the festival, and big crowds are expected to flock to the event, which is now in its 14th year.

A variety of vintage vehicles will be motoring in for the festival, with one of the main attractions the oldest Austin in the world, with a body made almost exclusively of wood.

Meanwhile, in High Street Mall car park, an auction of vintage and modern agricultural equipment, in association with Wilson’s Auctions, will start at 1pm.

A second auction, of miscellaneous tools and goods, will begin at 11am in the mall’s former Sofa Land premises.

The town will also be ringing to the sounds of animals, with two petting farms bringing along their feathered and furry friends.

Traditional crafts such as thatching, butter-making, spinning, cider-making and threshing will be demonstrated and there will be an opportunity to sample some of the mouth-watering, old-fashioned fare including a hog roast.

Keeping the show rolling along, music-wise, will be a medley of country musicians, both in the town’s main plaza and in the side streets.

The People’s Park will be the venue for the horse and pony classes, along with pony rides for children, and other attractions for kiddies on the day will include a magician, face painting, slides and trampolines.
