Bloodied water leaks into hospital ward
CRAIGAVON AREA HOSPITAL
A MIX of blood and water from a birthing bath at Craigavon Area Hospital’s maternity unit leaked through a cracked pipe into a ward below.
An investigation has been ordered into the incident which took place last week.
It is understood a patient alerted staff after spotting the bloodied water dripping through the crack in the ceiling on to a bed on the ward.
It transpired the leak was coming from the room above which houses nine delivery suites and baths that women can use to give birth or for pain relief. There is also a birthing pool.
The unit, which opened 12 years ago, was the first of its kind for Northern Ireland and caters for women with low-risk pregnancies who want a natural birth.
The Southern Health and Social Care Trust confirmed an investigation was taking place.
“The Trust can confirm an incident in the midwifery-led unit in Craigavon Area Hospital involving a cracked pipe in the bath used by mothers during labour,” said a spokesperson.
“A blood-stained water leak became apparent in the ward below although no patients were affected.
“The Trust is currently investigating the incident and checking other baths and pipes within the unit and apologises for any inconvenience caused.”
