Borough council draws up list of 10 solicitors

CRAIGAVON Borough Council - which has functioned with one solicitor since its inception in 1973 - appointed a list of 10 on Monday night.

Borough solicitor Brian Walker - of Walker McDonald in Edward Street, Portadown - has been the council’s legal adviser for 25 years, and before him the incumbent was Jimmy Neill. Walker McDonald are among the 10 on the list.

Earlier this year, the local government auditor insisted that legal services had to be tendered for - with the result that a complicated solution was reached in Monday night’s ‘in committee’ session. Councillors decided that services should come under three categories and that the 10 should be placed on the various lists - some are on all three, others are on two and some on just one, according to their particular expertise.

The categories are - Employment/HR; commercial property and land; and local government legislation. Eight of the 10 have offices in Belfast.

The list is (Belfast unless otherwise stated) - Arthur Cox; A. and L. Goodbody; Campbell Fitzpatrick, Cleaver Fulton Rankin; Edwards and Co.; Walker McDonald (Portadown); Worthington’s: Campbell Stafford; Jones Cassidy Jones; Rosemary Connolly (Warrenpoint).

Mr Walker will retain his current cases with the council and as new ones evolve, the new list will be brought into operation.
