Bowling success for club members
TEN athletes from the Portadown-based Ripples Special Olympics Club travelled to Dundonald Ice Bowl to compete in the regional 10 pin bowling event.
The club members had progressed from the area stages and successful athletes will be picked for Team Ulster to compete against Leinster, Munster, Connaught and the Eastern region in the next round of competition in Limerick.
It was a long and tiring day for the athletes who left Portadown at 8.15am and did not return until 6.45pm, but the jangle of medals on the bus journey home as well as Mark Blevins’ singing kept everyone awake.
In the singles section, gold went to Matthew Lavery and Matthew Beggs and silver to Kyle Herron, Richard Hale, Robert Harte and Trevor Rhodie.
Barry Wright took fifth place, Glen Williamson and Mark Blevins sixth place and Jennifer Jones seventh.
In the doubles section, Kyle Herron and Matthew Beggs won gold, as did Barry Wright and Richard Hale.
Bronze awards went to Matthew Lavery and Glen Williamson, and Jennifer Jones and Trevor Rhodie. Mark Blevins and Robert Harte were placed eighth.
The coaches said they were extremely proud of all the athletes and wished those lucky enough to make it to the next round the best of luck.
