Charges for three car parks start from July 2

CHARGES will be formally introduced at three of Portadown’s prime car parks from Monday, July 2.

Motorists will no longer be permitted to park for free at Magowan Buildings (1), West Street and William Street car parks.

A charge of 40 pence per hour will apply in Magowan Buildings (1) car park and 30 pence for up to three hours will apply in West Street and William Street car parks.

A statement from the DRD on Wednesday confirms the suspicions of campaigners in Portadown that they had lost the battle to prevent the charges coming into force.

Minister Danny Kennedy, who has made no secret of the fact that the move is revenue driven, has also highlighted his scrapping of previous plans to introduce on-street parking charges in Portadown.

The DRD said, “On April 18, 2012 Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy confirmed he intended to complete the Budget 2011 year one review of car park tariffs by introducing charges to the 25 free car parks which were consulted upon last year. The completion of the year one review is an essential step towards making car parking services self-funding and to protect critical front-line repair and maintenance services on our roads. The Minister also committed to ensuring that some free off-street or on-street car parking would remain as an alternative for motorists in every town.

“Portadown was one of the towns that benefited when Mr Kennedy announced last year that he would not be proceeding with plans to roll out on-street parking charges to around 30 towns and cities across Northern Ireland.”

The statement also emphasised that Portadown retains plenty of free car parking spaces.

It added, “Some 680 free car parking spaces remain at Riverbank, Castle Street, Foundry Street, Fairgreen, Meadow Lane East and Wilson Street car parks.

“Parking restriction notices are clearly displayed at all locations.”
