THE 98th annual Mullahead Ploughing Match is taking place at the traditional venue of Richardson’s Estate, Moyallon just outside Gilford, on Saturday February 25, writes Richard Hampton.

It is the largest event of its kind in the world and is arguably considered the most successful rural event in Northern Ireland. The ploughing match will see thousands of people from all over the UK coming to enjoy all of its attractions.

The event is supported by Craigavon, Banbridge and Armagh councils, as well as local businesses and Tesco, which marks its 12th year of association with the event.

Cliff Kells of Tesco said, “Mullahead Ploughing Match continues to go from strength to strength, and to reflect these developments our marquee, which hosts product displays by Tesco and all the other participating food companies, will be a buzz of activity.”

Mullahead Tractor Pulling Association president Kenny Gracey confirmed the growing success of the ploughing match. He said, “This year’s event will be larger and better than ever.”

Association secretary Neil Chapman pointed out how “every region of the British Isles will be represented” at the eagerly awaited event.

The event not only exhibits the sport of ploughing, it also boasts an array of local produce, craft and other attractions from all over the local rural community. Mr Gracey added, “It is a real day out for all the family.”

The ploughing match is held and supported by volunteers only and as Mr Gracey says, “It is a true role model for rural communities the length and breadth of Northern Ireland.

“Our rural communities have a heritage and ‘joie de vivre’ that is truly unique. And Mullahead & District Ploughing Society is proof that these unique qualities can be converted into events and public attractions with an appeal for people from all walks of life. And long may this continue to be the case!”
