Craigavon staff edge out Omagh in bike ride
Deputy Maor of Craigavon, Councilor Arnold Hatch took part in the 2012 Heart Town Cycle Challenge where 18 employees from Craigavon and Omagh Councils cycled on a ststionery bike for 20 minutes. Also included are fitness instuctors at ulse Fitness, Cascades, Caroline Jackson and Janmark Praca. INPT25-239.
STAFF at Craigavon Borough Council have been getting on their bike to fund groundbreaking research that could begin to literally ‘mend broken hearts’ in as little as ten years’ time.
The ‘Two Wheels: Two Weeks’ Bike Week challenge didn’t prove to be too challenging for the staff.
They went pedal to pedal against staff at Omagh District Council to see who could cycle (on static bikes) the furthest and raise the most money for charity in a six-hour time trial. ‘Cycling’ passed the post to clock up a cumulative total of 234 miles were Craigavon, who beat Omagh District Council’s cumulative total of 205 miles.
The challenge was set as part of the British Heart Foundation Northern Ireland Heart Town with all proceeds in aid of the Mending Broken Hearts Appeal, which is funding groundbreaking research that could begin to literally ‘mend broken hearts’ in as little as ten years time.
The event took place within both councils. Each member of staff taking part in the challenge was allocated a 20-minute slot at Waves, Cascades or Craigavon Leisure Centres to try and cycle as far as they could in that time. The distance was recorded to be included in the cumulative total for the Council.
Mayor of Craigavon Councillor Carla Lockhart pedaled her support to staff, completing her 20-minute slot at Waves Leisure Centre. “I am delighted that we won the first part of the trial by cycling the furthest. Sponsorship money is still being collected so we will not know who has won that aspect of the challenge just yet. Setting a challenge between Craigavon and Omagh Council adds a fun competitive element to the sponsored cycle and gives staff a great incentive to participate. The Mending Broken Hearts Appeal is such a worthwhile cause and staff in both councils have been very supportive in both giving up their own time to complete the trial and in raising much needed money for the charity.”
