Curran Street plans moving forward
Portadown Park
AN announcement is expected shortly on plans for the regeneration of the Curran Street/Obins Street site.
The site, which has been derelict for many years and has been a magnet for anti-social activities, was bought by the Department of Social Development (DSD) in December 2008.
Just last week, the department made a vesting order for part of the land. A DSD spokesperson explained, “To ensure that there are no difficulties with the sale of individual units in the future, the department has agreed to vest two small areas, approximately 40 square metres in total.”
She said a formal announcement would be made shortly on the regeneration of the site.
Consultants have been appointed to develop proposals for the site and planning permission has been given to build 35 houses and supporting neighbourhood retail and office accommodation.
The site is part of Craigavon Area Plan, which also includes the redevelopment of the neighbouring People’s Park and the regeneration of the Tunnel area.
Upper Bann MLA John O’Dowd and his Sinn Fein party colleague, Cllr Gemma McKenna, met last week with DSD officials. Said Mr O’Dowd, “Obins Street has been neglected in recent years and is need of a facelift. We had a constructive discussion with officials on alternative funding streams such as Neighbourhood Renewal as a means of developing a worthwhile package and we will be pursuing this issue with other interested parties.”
