A PORTADOWN engineering company has received a prestigious aerospace award for supply excellence, setting it firmly on the map within the UK and internationally, writes Andrea Rice.
JW Kane Precision Engineering, based at Carn, is one of seven companies within Northern Ireland to receive the Supply Chains for the Twenty First Century (SC21) award. The ceremony, which took place at ‘Titanic Belfast’, saw an appearance from the Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster, who opened the National SC21 Task Force conference.
JW Kane Precision were presented the award by the general manager of Bombardier Aerospace, Stephen Cowan. The Belfast based manager said that the recognition for aerospace supply excellence is something Northern Ireland can continue to build on.
“These awards today demonstrate the commitment of local suppliers to improving their competitiveness through the SC21 programme, and we want to build on this success,” he said. “The work of the Aerospace Growth Partnership will further develop a supply chain competitiveness improvement programme that will enable the UK aerospace industry as a whole to differentiate itself from the global competition in high-technology, high-value areas.”
Without robust supply chains, the aerospace industry could not continue to grow at the same rate and the SC21 stamp of approval is critical in delivering industrial competitiveness. The programme aims to improve the UK aerospace and defence industry suppliers in areas such as business excellence, manufacturing excellence and quality and delivery.
Neil McManus, VP & MD Spirit AeroSystems Europe and Chairman of SC21 Industry Steering Group said, “The SC21 programme is a foundational element of the Aerospace Growth Partnership, recognising that competitive and sustainable supply chains are vital to the future growth and success of our industry.
“My congratulations go to the award winners recognised here today – they are a tremendous testament of the depth and breadth of the aerospace supply chain capability here in Northern Ireland.”
