How Jagger and Johnson passed Jonny’s Stratford security check!
Ranger Johnny Wright with Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
PORTADOWN TA soldier Jonny Wright ended up rubbing shoulders with some of the most famous faces in Britain recently as part of his security role at the London Olympics.
Ranger Wright, who worked 12-hour shifts at a vehicle search area (VSA) at the site of the Olympic Park in Stratford, counted London Mayor Boris Johnson and Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger among those who passed through his security check.
“Boris Johnson was a bit wacky but the reception he got and gave us was brilliant. Mick Jagger thanked us for the job we were doing and told us that he supported us – this whole experience has been fantastic,” said Jonny.
Both the regular Army and the TA were required to provide security at the Olympics. As part of the 2nd Battalion, The Royal Irish 2 R IRISH, Jonny played a major role in this once-in-a lifetime event.
He joined the unit in 2011 after always wanting to “try something with the army”.
He said, “One of my friends is in the TA. He said it was brilliant fun and so I took him up on it – there are plenty of opportunities and it’s a lot of fun.”
It only took John and his colleagues several minutes to thoroughly search any vehicles coming through the VSA and Jonny says the reaction of the public was “fantastic”.
