Increase in vomiting and diarrhoea prompts hospital warning

PEOPLE with symptoms of vomiting and diarrhoea are being urged not to visit Craigavon Area Hospital.

The warning follows an increase in recent days of cases of vomiting and diarrhoea in the community which has resulted in hospitals dealing with higher numbers of patients with the conditions.

The Southern Health and Social Care Trust is also appealing to people not to visit hospitals or other health and care facilities unless absolutely necessary.

Trust medical director Dr John Simpson said, “We appreciate that family and friends want to visit loved ones when they are in hospital and that patients are greatly comforted by these visits.

“However, to keep our patients safe we must restrict visiting to allocated times and ask visitors to help us provide a caring environment and to protect patients from the spread of infection.”

Dr Simpson said full infection prevention and control measures are in place in all hospitals to cope with the extra incidences of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Recently, new signs were erected reminding patients to follow guidance on hospital visiting. The signs list a number of simple but vital steps visitor can take that will greatly reduce the spread of infections to patients.

Dr Simpson added, “Our staff have the most stringent infection control measures in place but they really need public support to help keep our vulnerable patients safe.”
