IRWIN’S Bakery in Portadown marked its 100th anniversary today (Friday) with a royal visit from The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall.

The Royal Highnesses were welcomed to the family-owned bakery around 10.30am by the Lord-Lieutenant of County Armagh, the Rt Hon The Earl of Caledon, Upper Bann MP David Simpson, Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Alan Carson, their respective spouses and Irwin’s Bakery chairman and technical director, Brian and Niall Irwin respectively.

The Prince and Duchess were then given a guided tour of the factory and meet with Irwin’s excited staff who showed them how the bakery produces its popular soda farls, potato bread and Nutty Krust loaves.

The pair were relaxed and joked with the employees and even tried out soda ‘flipping’ with the help of employee Wendy McClatchey.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess then mingled with invited guests, including celebrity chef Paul Rankin, before the Prince unveiled a plaque marking the royal visit and cutting a 100th birthday cake with a sword.

The royal couple left the bakery to warm applause to continue their two-day visit to Northern Ireland by travelling to Armagh City where the Royal Highnesses will take in a tour of Armagh Gaol and the planetarium.
