Man injured in ‘sectarian hate crime’
A MAN received injuries to his right ear after being hit with a pick axe handle, in what police are describing as a sectarian hate crime.
The attack took place in Cecil Street, Portadown, around 9.15pm when the window of a house was smashed.
The householder went outside and saw five men making off towards Burnbrae Avenue. When he shouted out to them, one of the men assaulted him with a pick axe handle.
The men were wearing dark clothing and had their faces covered with scarves/hoods.
The man, who was left shocked by the attack, is originally from the Edgarstown area. It is believed that his attackers shouted abuse at him, including references to him having “Fenian friends”.
The incident took place as a loyalist flag protest came to an end in Portadown town centre. The police are not directly linking the protest to the attack but stressed they are investigating all lines of enquiry.
Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information on it to contact them on 0845 600 8000 or contact the independent Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
