Man punches and kicks woman during altercation

A 20-YEAR-OLD man punched and kicked a woman after an argument broke out, Craigavon Court has been told.

Alan McCreery, of Ballybay Park, Portadown was given an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for three years, for assault occasioning actual bodily harm on October 6.

For a common assault charge which happened the following day, October 7, he was given two months in custody, suspended for two years.

The court heard that on October 6 at 10.15pm in Bridge Street, Portadown, the injured party and McCreery were involved in an altercation which led to her being punched and kicked by the defendant.

She said that she fell to the ground and claimed to have broken her arm and have bruising to her body.

The defendant admitted to police making contact with the injured party and said she had been ‘slabbering’ at him. He claimed he had been punched in the face.

The second assault the following day involved a minor altercation between the same couple.

A solicitor for McCreery said the injured party accepted she had struck the defendant in the face.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, said McCreery previously had custody for assault charges and probation.

He added that the defendant had accepted his part in the altercation. He said there was no medical evidence about the broken arm but he had no reason to disbelieve what she had said.

But because of the lack of medical evidence he was not able to assess compensation to the injured party.
