Man stripped naked and urinated in cell at police station

A Portadown man who assaulted police constables and stripped naked and urinated in a cell at the police station has been jailed for nine months.

Sean Robinson (28), of Ballyoran Park, Portadown, appeared before Craigavon Magistrates Court last Thursday.

His offences, which happened on December 27, included three assaults on the police, resisting police, disorderly behaviour, unlawful damage to a police vehicle and unlawful damage to a police cell.

The court heard that at 1.40am at a takeaway at Magowan Buildings in Portadown police saw the defendant punching two males to the head and the face.

Robinson struggled with police, struck one officer on the face, head-butted another officer and tried to kick a third.

He was swearing profusely and tried to fight with police. He had to be lifted off the ground and carried into the police land rover. He used sectarian language towards police and spat in the rear of the vehicle.

Robinson then had to be physically carried into the police cell where he stripped naked and urinated in the cell. He stood naked in front of the door and refused to provide his details to police.

A solicitor for the defendant said his behaviour was reprehensible. This was due to the amount of alcohol he had taken.

He told the court that Robinson had been drinking since after his dinner on Christmas Day. He had been binge drinking right through until his arrest. On this occasion he went to get a takeaway and got involved with the police. He had no recollection of what happened after his arrest.

District Judge, Mr Alan White, told Robinson his conduct was ‘absolutely appalling’ from the very start of the incident to the end.

For each of the offences he sentenced Robinson to five months in prison, all to run concurrently.

A suspended sentence hanging over the defendant was varied to four months, to run consecutively to the other sentences making a total of nine months in custody.
