Masked men attack police on bonfire night
POLICE came under attack from gangs of masked men in the Obins Street area on Wednesday evening.
Petrol bombs and stones were thrown at officers as motorists were diverted from Obins Street, Obins Drive and the Park Road areas.
A police spokesman told the Portadown Times yesterday (Thursday) there were no reports of injuries and no arrests had been made.
Meanwhile, a security alert in Lurgan on Wednesday evening forced police to close off the town centre while a series of controlled explosions were carried out on a vehicle.
Army bomb experts carried out the operation in the Church Place area.
The level of public disorder displayed in Portadown on July 11 this year is in sharp contrast to last July, when three homes, inhabited by foreign nationals, in the mainly nationalist Craigwell Avenue came under attack by a mob.
The incident sparked a tense stand-off between residents and police in riot gear.
