Mum and son lose 11 stone and gain new lease of life

A PORTADOWN mother and son have turned their lives around by losing a combined total of 11 stone in weight in just six months.
Barbara Scott and her son Gareth decided to join their local Slimming World group in February after 19-year-old Gareth was shocked by how much he weighed.
By improving their eating habits and including regular exercise in their daily routine, Barbara has reduced her weight by five stone and Gareth by almost six stone, and the pair have waved goodbye to the lethargy, aching joints and low energy they had experienced before.
The mother and son chose Slimming World, having heard about the group through friends and work colleagues, and are now faithful attenders at their local Drumcree group.
Said Barbara, “At first I was apprehensive about joining after having tried and failed to lose weight using other methods, but was immediately put at ease by the welcoming and friendly group atmosphere. We go to the group every week and have made so many friends, as we all help and support each other along the way. I’ve never felt embarrassed if I’ve had a hard week.”
Gareth has become a keen cook, helping to make favourite recipes such as burgers and chips, meatballs and curries. “He is even eating a wide variety of foods that he would not have tried before,” said Barbara.
Both have also taken up regular exercise which has helped not only with their weight loss but with fitness levels. “At first it was a struggle to exercise, but as the weight has come off our energy levels have risen. We now love to get out and really miss it if something comes up that stops us,” said Barbara.
The pair are confident they can reach their personal weight targets and, having done so, intend to continue with their new eating and fitness regime, with the continued support of the group,
