A PORTADOWN man who is now living in London is gearing up for a charity bike ride that will see him cover just over 1,000 miles for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Noel Tiffney has started fundraising for the challenge that will see him and his team visit five capital cities across the UK and Ireland in the space of just 11 days.

The team will leave Belfast with 16 other fundraising cyclists on July 1, stopping off at Dublin, Cardiff, London and Edinburgh to visit staff and patients in Marie Curie Hospices before cycling back to finish in Marie Curie’s Belfast Hospice on July 11.

To kick-start his fundraising efforts, Noel visited Rushmere Shopping Centre in Craigavon on Easter Saturday with his exercise bike, and he and some of his fellow cyclists gave shoppers a glimpse of what’s in store in the Capital Cycle Challenge by spending a whole day on the bikes.

Speaking after his appearance at Rushmere Noel said, “We’re in the middle of training for the big event now and I can’t wait to get going. It will be very tough but nothing compared to what cancer sufferers go through on a daily basis. The people of Portadown have been so supportive since I started training for the challenge and we thank everyone for their kind donations at the weekend.”

Rushmere Shopping Centre manager, Martin Walsh, added, “Noel and his team are putting a tremendous effort into raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care and we were delighted to welcome some of the team to Rushmere this weekend as part of their fundraising drive.”

Those who didn’t see Noel and his team at the weekend but would like to make a donation can do so online via www.virginmoneygiving.com/team/www.capitalcyclechallenge.com
