On starter’s orders for Xpression 2012

AROUND 400 volunteers from a range of local churches will take part in the annual Xpression outreach initiative in Portadown, Richhill and Craigavon next week.

Taking place from Monday to Friday, Xpression promises to offer a week of activities to remember, with the volunteers offering assistance to anyone who needs it.

The event has been running since the summer of 2005 and according to committee member, Matthew Guy, it has come on in leaps and bounds.

Said Matthew, “We at Xpression believe that, in this age of change and doubt, it is all the more important to make known the good news of the Bible; that in spite of what may seem like a cruel and suffering world, there is a God who is in control.

“There is a God who created us, and loved us so much that he himself went through intense suffering on a cross for our sake. A God who has promised that one day he will wipe each tear-stained eye, and put an end to all suffering and cruelty. It is around these fantastic truths that we, a group of volunteers from a wide variety of local churches and age brackets, can gladly unite.

“We will be taking to the streets once again. Look out for us in Brownstown, Craigavon, Corcrain, the Garvaghy Road and Obins Street, Killicomaine, the town centre and Richhill - in all of these areas we have planned a great programme of events, and would be delighted to offer any service we can to local residents. Why? Because in spite of all the changes that have occurred since then, the words of Paul which inspired the creators of Xpression in 2005 still ring true for Christians today; that ‘the only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love’.”

There are a wide range of opportunities planned for everyone to come along and enjoy. The itinerary is as follows: Kids Clubs: Monday to Thursday (2.30-4pm) in Millington Primary School, Killycomain Community Centre, Ashgrove Community Centre & Corcrain Community Centre. Monday to Wednesday (7-8.15pm) in St Saviour’s, Craigavon and Parkmore Community House. Monday to Thursday (2-4pm) in St Matthew’s Church Hall, Richhill. Open Air Concert : Friday (7.30pm-9.30pm) in Portadown town centre.

CRAIGAVON: Thursday (7pm) : Community Fun Night at St Saviour’s Church. Richhill: Friday (2-4pm): Tea Party in Richhill Methodist Church Hall. Brownstown Monday (7pm): International night in the Best Centre, Deramore Drive. All nationalities welcome. Tuesday (7-9pm) : Football Competition (10-17years) at Brownstown 3G Pitch. Wednesday (7-8.30pm): barbecue at Brownstown Community Centre; Thursday (3-4pm) : Teddy Bear’s Picnic at Brownstown Play Park; Thursday (7.30pm): Concert featuring Battlehill Pipe Band and local Drum Majors in Brownstown Community Centre.

CORCRAIN: Tuesday and Wednesday (7.30pm): Football at Corcrain pitches; Tuesday (7.30pm): girl’s night at Corcrain Community Centre; Wednesday (7.30pm): Gospel concert at Epworth Methodist Church; Thursday (7pm): barbecue at Corcrain Community Centre.

GARVAGHY: Tuesday (2-4pm): Crafts at the Darby & Joan Club, Woodside; Tuesday (7pm): barbecue outside St Mary’s Youth Club; Thursday (2pm): cafe at the Darby & Joan Club; Thursday (7pm): barbecue at Churchill Park Green.

KILLYCOMAIN: Tuesday (7.30pm): fight in St Patrick’s Youth Centre; Wednesday (7pm) : BBQ at St Patrick’s Youth Centre; Thursday (7.30pm): disco in St Patrick’s Youth Centre.

PORTADOWN TOWN CENTRE: Tuesday (1.30pm): barbecue outside St Mark’s; Tuesday (7.30pm): acoustic night in the Xpression Cafe, The Meadows Shopping Centre. Wednesday (7pm): fun night at The Annagh Football Club

Thursday (1.30pm): barbecue outside St Mark’s
