Phillips shoe shop to close down
ANOTHER established business in the centre of Portadown is closing at the end of the month - Michael Phillips Shoes in Market Street - with the loss of seven jobs.
The shop, which has operated in town for almost 25 years, is a victim of the downturn, and one of the privately-owned businesses in town.
The proprietor is Michael Donaghy, who runs a large retail business in Banbridge, as well as outlets in Lisburn, Lurgan and the large Banbridge outlet centre.
Mr Donaghy has not been available for comment, but it has been learned that the staff are on their notice, and they speak of a firm that has been “a delight to work for over the years”.
The firm was started in Banbridge almost 50 years ago by Michael’s parents Peter and Eileen Donaghy, and he joined in 1988 as they expanded to Lisburn, Portadown and Lurgan with their Michael Phillips shoe shops.
They sell mainly Clark’s Shoes in Portadown, and they will be missed by the loyal customers they have served over the years.
