Police and council target noise problem
POLICE are joining forces with Craigavon Borough Council and the Housing Executive to clamp down on excess noise over the festive period.
PSNI officers are carrying out joint patrols with the council to target those areas which suffer from excess noise during night time hours.
Councils are required to investigate all types of noise complaints including night time noise under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment (NI) Act 2011.
In many instances however police will be the first point of contact for people making complaints about night time noise. Officers will respond to these complaints and pass details on to the council.
Craigavon Area Commander, Chief Inspector Anthony McNally said, “We understand that noise is a real antisocial problem in some areas within Craigavon and want to show the community that we are taking proactive steps to address this issue.
“This is very much evidenced by the joint patrols we are carrying out with partners from Craigavon Borough Council and Housing Executive, the first of which took place across the borough on Friday, December 14. These patrols are an excellent way for us to take immediate action when we identify noise nuisances. We would however also ask local residents to support us by reporting instances of excess noise to us when they occur and by being aware of the noise levels in their own home recognising what is acceptable, particularly between 11pm at night and 7am in the morning.”
Chairman of the council’s environmental services committee, Councillor Gemma McKenna said “The message is to consider your neighbours when you plan a party, particularly at Christmas or New Year, so that they can also enjoy the festive period.
“If you are too noisy and disturb the peace of others you will hear from us as we investigate all noise complaints.”
