THE retired policeman found dead on the railway line at Horseshoe Lane, Brackagh, on Saturday evening was badly beaten up three years ago, it emerged this week.

Friends said that 52-year-old Trevor Hobson was scarred physically and mentally by the severe beating be received in May 2009 at Hoy’s Meadow in Edenderry, and that it may have contributed to his suicide.

It was reported at the time that he lay at the scene of the assault for a number of hours before being rushed to the intensive care unit of Craigavon Area Hospital. A friend told the Portadown Times, “That incident affected him badly.”

Saturday’s incident happened on the main Portdown-Dublin line where the railway line runs parallel with the Newry Canal, close to Horseshoe Lane and Moneypenny’s Lock.

Mr Hobson, who served for in the RUC for a number of years, was struck by a train, and the police said they closed the line just before 7pm, re-opening it at 11.30pm.

A PSNI spokesman said, “A body was found on the line between Portadown and Scarva and a crime is not suspected.”

A father-of-three, he was divorced, and his home was at Donard Gardens in Lurgan. His children are Stephen, Jessica and Gabrielle and the house and funeral were strictly private. He had recently worked as a security officer with the Tesco organisation, and the family diverted all enquiries to Ian Milne and Sons Undertakers.

After Mr Milne had counselled the family, he said, “It really is a sad situation, but I cannot comment any further.”

Residents in Brackagh said that the area was teeming with police and fire service on Saturday night, and that flowers had been placed adjacent to the scene of Mr Hobson’s sudden death.

“We feel very sorry for the family and send our sympathy,” said one resident. “We don’t the victim, but he must have been a troubled soul and we pray for him and for the people he leaves behind.”
