TRAFFIC had to be diverted from the Garvaghy Road yesterday morning (Thursday) after a “substantial” water main burst.

The burst came to light at around 5am and NI Water staff were quickly on site.

A spokesperson for NI Water said the bursts had been isolated at the junction of Park Road and Garvaghy Road and under Shillington’s Bridge but that no customers had been affected.

She added, “The water pressure has caused the road surface to lift.”

The incident occurred just yards from a similar burst in June.

At the time of going to press, the road had been re-opened but work was still going on to repair the faults.
