MEMBERS of the Rotary Club of Portadown have planted an oak tree in the grounds of Clounagh Junior High School to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
The tree, aptly named a ‘Royal Oak’, also represents the long association that the club has with the school.
Joint president of the Rotary Club Gordon Speers, a former pupil of Clounagh, wielded the spade and said he was delighted and honoured to plant the tree on behalf of members.
The school’s first headmaster, the late David Watson OBE, was a long-serving member of the club and president in the early 1970s and Ambrose Elliott, a former vice-principal, is still a member and also served as district governor of Rotary in Ireland and club president in the 1980s.
Arnold Hatch, president elect of the club, is the chairman of Clounagh’s Board of Governors.
The event was co-ordinated by the Rotary’s Club’s environmental office Betty McClurg, OBE, who said she was very pleased to received sponsorship for the project from past pupil Stephen McDonald, who recently launched his garden services business Mower 4 Less’. Like Mr Speers, he was a pupil when Mr Watson was headmaster.
Mrs McClurg has thanked headmaster Trevor Canning for his help and support, as well as Mr Hatch and past president Mark McElroy for his professional advice and guidance.
