Safety fears at junction
The Brownstown Road - Armagh Road Junction. INPT18-234.
MOTORISTS will have to endure at least another four weeks of construction work at the Brownstown Road junction with the Armagh Road (pictured above) as the Roads Service makes changes to the layout.
The news comes as drivers have been contacting the Portadown Times to say they are taking detours to avoid the junction due to safety concerns.
One motorist, John Ferguson, said he was one of the those who was now avoiding the area.
“There are three lanes of traffic, one of which is a filter lane, that allows drivers to turn-off and I’m concerned the filter lane could be mistaken for a normal lane,” he said.
Mr Ferguson said he feared there could be a head-on collision if motorists weren’t made aware of the lay-out.
“It’s very busy with the amount of lorries using the road to turn onto the Mahon Road,” he explained.
Another reader, who contacted the ‘Times via text, described the situation as “chaotic”.
“Why could the Roads Service not have left the road layout alone? The new system is a total nightmare and will cause chaos, particularly to those going into Shamrock Park. Yet another Roads Service disaster.”
However, a spokeswoman for the Road Service stressed the work was being carried out to upgrade traffic signals and revise the layout.
“The works should be completed by late May / early June,” she added.
