Send the traffic wardens to Seagoe

IT isn’t often that traffic wardens are welcome anywhere. But businesses in the Seagoe Industrial Estate have put out a call - so far unanswered - for the Portadown ‘red-coats’ to sort out a perennial parking problems adjacent to the massive Moy Park chicken factory.
And hopes are high that - with the intervention of the Portadown Times - the issue may soon be sorted. A DRD spokesman said: “Following concerns raised by business owners, resources are now in place to enable NSL traffic attendants to patrol this area.”
Some employees of Moy Park are parking on double yellow lines in areas outside the boundaries of the factory, close to junctions, at the entrances of smaller factories, and underneath ‘no parking at any time’ signs.
And they are doing it with impunity, despite campaigns by the management of the smaller factories at Carn, and requests from their own HR Department.
Kenny Herron, manager of ‘Furniture Outlet’ just across the road from Moy Park, said, “It’s a problem day after day. Moy Park employees park their cars at the approach to our premises - and to several others - blocking the path of the 40-foot lorries that deliver to use. At least four firms are affected.
“The delivery lorry drivers often have to park well away from our showroom and then we have to carry the furniture. Or if they can squeeze in, a car is damaged occasionally. It really is a nuisance. We have complained to Moy Park, and to be fair, the management is doing its best. There is more than adequate parking space within the grounds of the factory, but drivers park all over the place for a quick getaway.
“It’s worst of all when the four o’clock shift starts. We have put in request after request for the traffic wardens to come out and sort it, but they don’t seem interested and neither do the police. The wardens seem too busy at pulling up every minor parking incident in Portadown, rather than sorting out the major problems here.”
A spokesman for Moy Park said they were doing their best to sort it out. “We have left notes in the pay packets of every employee, we have spelled it out on our notice boards, and we have contacted the traffic wardens and police in Portadown, but we can’t seem to move anybody,” he added. “About a year ago, a car parked in the wrong place was badly damaged by a 40-foot lorry. We thought that might sort things out, but not a bit of it.
“We have more than enough parking space for everyone in our own grounds and have done all we can, but only the traffic wardens and police can sort this out. We’ll continue to do our best.”
Said Kenny Herron, “We acknowledge fully that the management is aware of the problems and are trying to sort them out, but only the law can enforce the parking restriction. If the like of this happened in Portadown, the wardens would be swooping all the time.”
