Seven people fined in court for littering

SEVEN people have been fined for littering after appearing at Craigavon Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

In total, 14 cases were brought to the court by Craigavon Borough Council, with seven cases adjourned to the April and May sittings and the remaining seven were found in favour of the council. Each of these cases received fines and court costs; three were given £80 fines with court costs of £118, £125 and £140. A fourth was given two £80 fines for two separate incidents and court costs of £128. The fifth was awarded a £40 fine and court costs of £125 for failure to reply to an Article 20 notice and the final case was awarded £120 fine and £109 after they failed to appear in court on two separate occasions.

“Whilst the emphasis recently has been on dog fouling, Craigavon Borough Council’s Environmental Enforcement team are continuing to enforce our zero tolerance policy on littering. We want people to think before they throw down litter, you will receive a £80 fine if caught, which can increase up to £2,500 if taken to court. Please think before you drop,” said Trevor Clydesdale, Neighbourhood Environmental Manager

“People want to see their streets litter free and are supporting us in using the legislation available to help tackle the root of the problem. Residents within the borough are also very proactive using our online reporting facility to report offenders” concluded Mr Clydesdale.

Residents can report incidents of littering on the Council’s online reporting facility at www.craigavon.gov.uk/environment/waste-services/816-environmental-crime-report.html.
