Speeding a major concern in Loughgall
SPEEDING in Loughgall emerged as one of the biggest concerns of local residents at the September meeting of Loughgall and District Improvement Association.
Constable Ross Turner, who attended the meeting, told members that in a total of 223 minutes, the police detection team had recorded no fewer than 137 speeding offences in the area, which amounts to one speeding vehicle every minute and a half.
Chairman of the Association John Faulkner said that anyone who knew Loughgall would not be surprised at this.
He said, “Heavy lorry traffic has increased massively in the last few years, but that is not the main issue. It is in the morning and again in the evening as people are travelling to and from work that speeding is at its worst.
“There are several hazardous junctions in the village, such at the entrance to the Cope Primary School, and the risk of a serious accident is unacceptable.”
He said the association was very grateful to the police for their help in tackling the problem, but this was only the first step. “In the long run, we don’t want people to be caught and fined so much as to get them to slow down,” he said. “Loughgall’s growing reputation as somewhere that you get caught if you drive too fast is helpful. But what we really need are measures that encourage drivers to limit their speed.
“The association is in touch with the traffic unit of Roads Service. We have been promised that they will do a survey, and that this could lead to new traffic calming measures.”
