Taxi firms lend a hand in human trafficking fight

editorial image

TAXI companies in Portadown have joined the fight against human trafficking in the town.

Cab firms have been advised of the signs of trafficking so that they might be able to know how to respond to any suspicious activity as they are out and about.

Firms are displaying posters with the signs of trafficking on them in their offices and have been given stickers that drivers can put on their dashboards to remind them to report any suspicions to Crimestoppers and show their solidarity with the issue.

The initiative follows the continuing work of human trafficking awareness voluntary group Craigavon A.C.T. (Active Communities Against Trafficking) and Craigavon Intercultural Programme’s project ‘Freedom Acts’.

The groups were set up to raise awareness of the issue of human trafficking in the community and find ways to create public understanding of what human trafficking may look like and how to identify signs of trafficking happening in the wider Craigavon area.

A steering group has been established alongside these groups involving members from the PSNI, Craigavon Borough Council, SHSCT, Women’s Aid, Migrant Help and Craigavon Trades Council.

Craigavon A.C.T. have also been able to get some advertising space on a prominent billboard in Edenderry where a very striking poster has recently been raised for wider public impact and information.

The taxi companies that have come on board the campaign in support include Eden Cabs in Bridge Street and Call-A-Cab in Carleton Street .

Craigavon A.C.T. and Freedom Acts would like to thank the support of Trevor McConnell Wallpaper & Paint and the local taxi companies for standing with them to raise awareness of this issue and hope to offer more taxi firms an opportunity to join them in the near future.
