Tennis event nets funds for children of Uganda
A HIGHLY successful tennis tournament was held recently at the home of Laurence and June Andrews near Laurelvale, to raise funds for the visit of a team from Richhill Methodist Church to work for 16 days in Uganda under the auspices of Fields of Life, an organisation which began its charity work near Kampala in 1995.
While the purpose of the tournament was to help primary school children with education and health concerns in places like Rakai and Masindi, this method of raising cash proved very entertaining for competitors and spectators alike.
The standard of play was excellent, with Claire Andrews winning the ladies singles trophy and the men’s doubles title going to Stephen Blevins and Andrew Priestley.
Throughout the day, culinary needs were provided for by June Andrews and her willing team of helpers, with coffee, scones and fresh cream followed by home- made soup. The venture proved to be a huge success and the funds raised will go a long way towards alleviating the poor conditions experienced by children in at least some parts of Uganda.
