Tick dock may be gadget that we can’t live without

A PORTADOWN man has designed a phone accessory which he is hoping will become a stylish, bedside table must-have.
Stephen Conn, a design and technology teacher, came up with the idea for the Tick dock, a docking station for the iPhone 4 and 4S, around a year ago.
Working in conjunction with his business partner and former university friend Aaron Hamilton, the two men spent hours on painstaking research and work, including making a prototype, before settling on a product they were happy with.
Precision engineered from a solid piece of anodised aircraft-grade aluminium, and complemented by a brushed stainless steel face, the first 50 Tick docks rolled off the production lines a month ago.
Since then, around a dozen of the solid 1.6kg docking stations have been sold, and feedback has been good.
Said Stephen, “It is basically a premium built docking station for your phone, which you slot in and which makes use of the horizontal shape of your phone. Most, if not all of the other docks, sit up vertically.
“This is manufactured from expensive materials and looks really nice in landscape mode. It’s great for skyping, watching TV, or simply charging your phone overnight and using it as an alarm clock.
“It means you don’t wake up in the morning and realise you forgot to charge your phone.”
The Tick dock has been featured in the Stuff gadgets website and is also due to be included in T3 magazine’s list of 101 gadgets you can’t live without, which will be on newsagents’ shelves in July.
Stephen, who lives in Huntingdale Lodge, Portadown, said it had always been his dream to put a product on the market. “Even as a child I was interested in how things worked and taking them apart to see how they were made.
“I studied design and technology at A level and then went on to do it at degree level at the University of Ulster.”
