THE CarnGrove Hotel at Seagoe Road is up for sale after 30 years of trading, with the loss of six jobs.

A statement from the owners, the Kearney family, said that the doors will close on Saturday, July 21 “for personal and business reasons”.

It follows the death of former owner, the late Mr Seamus Kearney (70), who died suddenly as the result of a heart attack in March, leaving a void in the family who are finding it difficult to continue the business.

The statement read, “After much soul-searching we have taken the difficult decision to close the CarnGrove Hotel and place it on the market. It has not been an easy step, but it has been taken for personal and business reasons. We felt it was the best option, and all functions booked on or before July 21 will be honoured.”

The hotel has 35 bedrooms, a restaurant and bar, plus two function suites and five conference rooms. Staff were given 12 weeks notice and one told the Portadown Times, “Obviously we are devastated and we hope the hotel finds a buyer. The Kearneys have been wonderful employers and we feel like a family that is being broken up.

“We understand the reasons for the closure and hopefully we can find employment elsewhere. The Kearneys did their best to keep the hotel going, but trading is very difficult in the current recession.”

The asking price for the hotel has not been revealed.
