Trade union calls on locals to join youth protest march
THE Craigavon Trade Council is calling on people to join the March For a Future protest march organised by Youth Fight for Jobs in Belfast tomorrow (Saturday).
The protest march against youth unemployment and cuts to education coincides with the anniversary of the Belfast Outdoor Relief Strike, which brought together protestant and catholic workers in struggle against the Poor Laws. Roger Clifford, from the Trades Council, said, “We face a massive crisis of youth unemployment, with one in four already unemployed and the billions in cuts being implemented by the assembly will only make the situation worse.
“At the same time young people are forced out of education, especially by the prospect of the removal of EMA. “We also need to remember struggles like the Outdoor Relief Strike as they highlight that working-class communities, catholic and protestant, have the same interests, suffer with the same problems and are strongest when they stand united. That’s why we’re supporting this excellent initiative by Youth Fight for Jobs and call on our members and all trade unionists to join the march!” Patrick Mc Geown, local organiser for March For a Future, explained, “We are delighted that the Craigavon Trades Council has come behind the march. We have got great support from the trade union movement - including from NIPSA the biggest union Northern Ireland and Unite, the largest in Britain and Ireland- as well as from local community activists and young people. There is a growing momentum behind the March for a Future and it can be an inspirational event, bringing young people and workers together from across the sectarian divide to fight for our common interests- We encourage everyone from local area to come up to the march as the start to building a campaign against youth unemployment and young people be forced out of education.” The march will assemble at 1.30pm on Saturday, October 6 in Custom House Square in Belfast where the Outdoor Relief Strike was held - before marching up the Shankill and crossing the peace line to the Falls
