Ulster Covenant obelisk unveiled

THE granddaughter and great-grandson of Sir James Craig, the First Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, will be in Portadown tomorrow (Saturday) night to unveil an obelisk, marking the centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant in 1912.

Mrs Aileen Coleman will be travelling from her home in Scotland and her son Max from France to perform the ceremony in the town’s main plaza, and it will be the highlight of the occasion, organised by the Portadown Unionist Centenary Committee.

The proceedings will start at 6.45pm with two separate parades. One will leave from Carrickblacker Road and will include members of the 36th Ulster Division Association, the Somme Association and a number of community associations.

The second parade will depart from Brownstown Park, which will proceed to the West Street roundabout and into the town centre, where the parades will merge and be part of the ceremony.

The obelisk will be dedicated by Canon Jim Campbell, Rector of St Mark’s, assisted by Canon Bill Adair, Rector of St Columba’s and by the Rev Kenneth Elliott, minister of Bethany Free Presbyterian Church.

Then Mrs Coleman and Max will unveil the obelisk, which is inscribed with the wording of the Ulster Covenant and that local people provided the funds for it.

There will by items by the Ulster-Scots Group, including Scottish Dancing, and there will be an exhibition of Lambeg drumming, organised by renowned expert, Tommy Houston from Brackagh. All the bands on parade will be of the melody flute variety, and it will include a family night.

Craigavon Mayor, Councillor Carla Lockhart will be a special guest at the unveiling.
