Warning after bogus visit from the Water Board

POLICE in Portadown are reminding householders not to admit strangers to their home and to look out for elderly neighbours.

The advice comes following an incident in the town when a man called to a house and claimed to be from the Water Board. The elderly resident asked for ID and when none was forthcoming closed the door. A follow-up call to Northern Ireland Water confirmed that none of their staff were operating in the area at the time.

The male was wearing a blue boiler suit and is described as being in his 30s, tall, and fresh faced. He spoke with a foreign accent.

A police spokeswoman said, “Bogus callers depend on the good nature and good will of others. They tend to target the more vulnerable members of our society and in particular, older members of our community. It is always advisable to be cautious of unexpected callers.

“It is worth remembering that bogus callers will use all sorts of tactics to gain access to a victim’s home.”

Residents should try to look out for one another and report all suspicious activity to the police immediately. The non emergency police number is 0845 600 8000. In an emergency dial 999.
