Youth worker who took own life was being investigated in sex abuse probe
THE senior education officer who took his own life three weeks ago was being investigated for alleged sexual assault of a teenage boy during a weekend trip, it has emerged.
The Southern Education and Library Board is reported to have suspended David McCrory after they were informed of the alleged assault.
On the same day that he was contacted about the allegation, Mr McCrory’s body was found at Craigavon Lakes, close to his home at Ashdown Manor and near Craigavon Civic Centre, where his pregnant wife Louise works.
A spokesman for the board said, “An SELB spokesman confirmed that the Board was aware an allegation had been made in relation to a member of staff.
He said, “In light of this, the SELB suspended a member of staff on a precautionary basis in accordance with appropriate procedures, pending an investigation and with no assumption of guilt.”
inquest
With Mr McCrory having committed suicide, any police investigation has been superseded, and an inquest will be held on a future date.
It has also been learned that the alleged assault took place during a weekend trip to Great Britain, and that the matter was reported to the local police, who have written to the teenager’s parents offering their support.
At the time of Mr McCrory’s death, a PSNI statement confirmed that a man’s body had been found at Lake Road, Craigavon, and that a crime was not suspected.
