A Mace convenience store is opening in Portadown’s Market Street, with the owner of the ‘News and More’ premises in High Street Mall relocating and expanding his business.

The store is in the former Clark’s shoe shop, beside Hallmark Cards, and Eddie McConaghy will double his staff numbers from four to eight.

Mr McConaghy is convinced that his new business will thrive in the main street. “There is a real need for the type of services I’m offering – it will include a coffee bar, hot food, newspapers, convenience grocers, and the Lotto,” he said.

He has been six years in the Mall – “and doing pretty well” – but he believes the store will increase footfall in the town centre and that office workers especially will find the store a real boost.

“Since Dunnes closed their grocery end, the need for a convenience store has increased,” he said.

“Work is progressing apace in my new venture and it will open on November 26 – about a fortnight’s time.

“I’m looking forward to it. I know it is needed and the people of Portadown will support me.”

News of the Mace store’s opening is another boost for the town centre as High Street Mall unveiled two more new businesses.
