Man assaulted girlfriend after drinking “an awful lot of vodka”

A drunken man who had taken an “awful amount of vodka” and assaulted his girlfriend had to be carried into a police custody suite, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

Valdis Grundizs (47), of no fixed abode, appeared by way of videolink from Maghaberry Prison.

For unlawful assault on a female and resisting a constable he was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years.

The court heard that police went to a takeaway on the Gilford Road, Portadown, where a female claimed she had been assaulted by her partner. There was swelling around her lip and mouth.

The defendant became aggressive before throwing himself to the ground and refusing to move. He had to be carried to the police car and at Lurgan police station he refused to walk and had to be carried into the custody suite.

Mr Richard Monteith, representing the defendant, said that both Grundizs and his partner were exceptionally drunk.

He added that it was a turbulent relationship between two people who took “an awful lot of vodka”.
